Jake Walker

Rattling into a Rhythm

Opening reception: Thursday 14 November, 6-8pm

15 November - 20 December 2024

In Rattling into a Rhythm, the debut solo exhibition from Jake Walker (b. 1998, London), the artist presents new paintings that continue his interest in mixing repeated, dislocated motions, diagrams and scores to enact a built rhythm.

Informed by an interest in choreography – stemming from his early training at the Royal Ballet School in London – Walker intuitively layers vivid, saturated colourways that harmonise or work in discordance with one another across a mapped plane. The paintings speak to a visualisation of the multisensory experience of spaces in which the body encounters audio: soundscapes, with each painting charting a particular, though abstracted, constructed sonic environment. They function as individual arrangements of overlapping notes and gestures as they flow out and consume the room. As the reverberations disperse, bouncing off of and outlining multiple, radiating bodies, they are absorbed into the evening, held only in these novel scores, which are in turn markers of specific temporalities. The relationship between the artist’s own body, as it moves in dialogue with the canvas, is the central tool for the formation of these recordings. This can be both an expansive extension across the surface, or smaller, controlled, replicated gestures. This becomes a feedback loop, as Walker reflects on and responds to the forms that emerge, oscillating between these two states.
